WHY IT MATTERS

If your child experiences accidents or constipation, please know that they are not alone! Children, like adults, can experience pelvic floor dysfunction. These conditions are relatively common, even in the pediatric population, though not often discussed. In fact, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, up to 20% of children still experience bedwetting at age 5, and up to 10% still do at age 7. Additionally, one study has shown that constipation concerns accounts for at least 25% of all pediatric gastroenterologist visits.

Pelvic floor issues that are overlooked or not addressed can lead to stress for both child and parents and impact important things like attending sleep-overs, school, and even play. Families often see multiple specialists, taking time away from school and work, without finding a successful resolution to the issues. For true resolution of symptoms, the pelvic floor must be addressed to ensure proper bowel and bladder functioning as the child ages. In addition, creating an age-appropriate plan is critical to making both parents and children feel less stress and more empowered as we work through such a personal issue.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS READY?

We have high expectations of kids—sometimes too high. Physiologically, all children are different, but generally speaking, children are ready to start when through show an interest—usually between 2-4.

Our program offers an in-depth assessment to readiness and meets your child where they are at. This removes the stress and ensures success with each step as we move forward.

WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR?

A complex structure made up of 16 muscles that connect to 4 boney areas on the pelvis. In children the primary indications of pelvic floor dysfunction include:

  • Bowel or bladder accidents

  • Challenges with internal organs from surgeries, developmental dysfunction, or gastrointestinal or urinogenital complications

  • Instability or poor balance because these muscles support the “core”
